The state of information access in earthquake-affected areas of Pakistan

 
   
 
   

Summary findings of follow-up snapshot survey conducted by Internews between February 28 and March 4, 2006

 
   
Geographic range of survey  
Batagram, Balakot, Mansehra (all in North West Frontier Province)  
Muzafarabad, Bagh and Rawalakot (Pakistan-administered Kashmir)  
   
Population sample  

A total of 93 persons in these quake-affected areas were interviewed including 59 males and 34 females  
   
Education levels of surveyed sample  
  • 29 persons interviewed were illiterate including 12 males and 17 females
  • 28 had primary level education (14M, 4F)
  • 21 had middle level education (13M, 8F)
  • 15 had high school level education (12M, 3F)
  • 7 had intermediate level education (5M, 2F)
  • 7 had graduation level or above education (7M, 0F)
 
   
Dislocation  
  • 70 had left home communities
  • 23 stayed near home
 
   
Future plans of dislocated  
  • 29 intend to stay where they are (for foreseeable future)
  • 3 don't know where to go
  • 8 intend to leave for third location
  • 53 intend to return home
 
   
Radio listenership pre-earthquake  
  • 77 persons said they had radio sets at homes before the earthquake
  • 73 persons actually listened to one or more stations on these sets
 
   
Pre-quake choice of radio station (multiple choice)  
  • State-owned Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, PBC, (Radio Pakistan Islamabad and Muzaffarabad stations) were mentioned 67 times
  • BBC mentioned 37 times
  • Power FM-99 mentioned 7 times
  • FM-100 mentioned 9 times
  • FM-101 (state-owned) mentioned 2 times
 
   
Radio listenership post-earthquake  
  • 34 respondents said they had radio sets before the quake but had lost them
  • 43 said they still had their radio sets and listened to multiple sources of information
  • 16 had no radio sets before quake
  • 10 now have it (7 purchased it, and 1 each donated by FM105 and a friend)
  • Of the 23 people who stayed near home after the quake, 15 still have radio sets from before. (?%)
  • Of the 70 people that left their home communities, only 35 have radios. (?% )

  • 29 said Power FM-99 is among their multiple choices of stations they tune in to

  • 55 respondents had TV sets in their homes before the earthquake
  • 54 actually watched TV before the earthquake
  • 38 never had a TV set

  • 2 watch AJK TV 1 watches Doordarshan (Indian channel)
  • 2 respondents who have TV sets said they did not watch it
 
   
Source of information about emergency relief  
The range of multiple choices given to the survey sample included Friends, Radio, Newspapers, TV, Police/Military, Government, Civil Administration, Mosques, “Not at all”  
   
  • 65 respondents identified “radio” as one of their main sources of information
  • 57 identified “Friends” (word of mouth) as one of their main sources of information
  • 31 identified newspapers as one of their main sources of information
  • 22 identified TV as one of their main sources of information
  • 13 identified mosques as one of their main sources of information
  • 15 identified military/police as one of their main sources of information
  • 6 identified civil (local) administration as one of their main sources of information
  • 11 identified government (federal/state) as one of their main sources of information
  • 3 said they never got information from any of sources
 
   
Benefit from Relief Agencies  
  • 89 acknowledged receiving some benefit
  • 4 claimed they received no benefit
 
   
Have local authorities/ relief agencies consulted you about your needs?

Access to post-quake relief services  
   
  • 73 respondents said they are receiving healthcare including medicines. 20 said they were not getting it
  • 82 said clean drinking water was available to them. 11 said it was not
  • 90 said adequate food was available to them. 13 said it was not
  • 75 said sanitary facilities were available to them. 18 said they were not
  • 55 said electricity was available to them. 39 said it was not
  • 48 said they had warm clothing. 45 said they did not
  • 89 said tent/shelter was available to them. 4 said they did not
  • 81 said they had received Rs 25,000 from the government to rebuild homes. 12 said they had not
